Why you need an email list

… and more importantly, why you need to write to it regularly!

Whether you’ve not got an email list at all yet, or you do have one but you’re not nurturing it, this blog is for you.

Is your marketing focus on socials?

As small businesses, we spend a lot of time on our socials looking to drum up new clients and develop solid leads. Because when it comes to a free space where we can regularly talk about our services whilst interacting with potential customers, social media platforms are a brilliant resource.

But they do come with their own downfalls.

Have you thought about the fact that you don’t own anything that you put on social media? Not the images you share, the followers you amass, not the shoutouts you receive or the likes, comments or tags. And if your social media platform of choice should suddenly disappear, then everything you have put your energy into would go the same way.

There has been a lot of talk recently about changes being made that will encourage businesses to pay for reach on social media platforms, meaning those businesses who choose not to, will effectively get less reach than before.

This isn’t me saying that we should all be done with social media and throw the towel in, far from it. I love my social media accounts, and I too have spent time building up an audience.

I just want you to be aware that there is another, more reliable way to build those relationships.

Why Email?

Let me give you some figures.

The average engagement rate on Instagram is 0.6%.
A low to average open rate for email newsletters is around 24%.
So, you'd need 4000 followers to get the same level of engagement as you'd get from just 100 email subscribers.

Add to this the fact you ‘own’ the data that your subscribers have chosen to give you, normally in exchange for a ‘freebie’ or discount.

All those email addresses are stored in a system, that yes, you’ll be paying for depending on which email marketing system you choose, which you can access and download any time you wish to change provider.

Email gives you the opportunity to speak directly to an engaged audience. After all, they’ve already given you their personal details, keep them engaged through regular contact.

Email so Simple

It is that simple.

Use your social media to direct an engaged audience to sign up to your emails. Grow and nurture that mail list, develop a great relationship over time with your subscribers and you'll get far easier, higher-converting engagement with less effort!

‘But wait!’ I hear you cry.

‘What on earth do I write about?’

Again, my advice would be to keep it simple.

Make sure you have a great welcome sequence in place. This series of emails is triggered when a new subscriber signs up to your list.

A fabulous welcome sequence will include, a thank you, a brief introduction, a case study and testimonial, an example of how else you will bring value to your subscribers, and an offer.

First and foremost, the reason for maintaining regular contact with your list is to gently remind them who you are, what you do and how you can help them. That way, when they’re ready to look for someone to help them in the way you do, your business will be at the forefront of their minds.

More than traditional marketing

Email newsletters are a great way to tell your subscribers all about the services and products you offer, but you shouldn’t go in for the hard sell with every single email, because they’re gonna get pretty sick of it, pretty quickly.

Talk about other things, what else can you tell them that might bring value to their day?

Can you recommend other small businesses to help with other issues they may face?

Have you seen a life-hack online recently that has changed everything for you? Tell them!

By sharing other things you’ll start to build a strong relationship, not just one of service provider and customer.
